Since 1869 Gorgona, the smallest island of the Arcipelago Toscano with
an area of only 2.25 sq. km, has been the seat of an agricultural penal
colony. The island is covered by the typical Mediterranean vegetation
and has stunning cliffs overlooking crystal clear water. It is a still
uncontaminated natural paradise and a "happy island" in the
Italian prison system.
Today there are around 100 prisoners and 100 guards on the island, apart
from the only stable resident and a few summer residents who come to stay
in the small fishing villages. Thanks to its characteristic the island
is a sort of natural prison (there are cliffs everywhere and one tiny
beach is the only landing point), so prisoners are pretty free and can
attend to their chosen occupations, which range from agriculture to carpentry.
For example, they are responsible for the maintenance of the old part
of the village, which thanks to them has been completely restored.
Spending the last years of their sentence on the island is certainly a
sought after prize for the prisoners. Apart from the advantage of living
outdoors on this wonderful -and exclusive- island they can also choose
to learn new skills so that it will be easier for them to find a job when
they are released. Many prisoners choose to work in a natural environment,
for instance growing vegetables and looking after the chickens and the
cattle - they are virtually self-sufficient as they produce almost everything
they need. One of the prisoners is in charge of the pigs and is even attending
a course on the island to learn about homeopathy for pigs. As he needs
to be near his animals, he has a special permission to live in a small
house next to the pigsty. With view of the sea, of course.
